Quality Water Means Quality Life

1.2 billion people do not have access to clean water.
Help others avoid the choice between thirst or disease.

As we passed through the Ozark Mountains, among Missouri scenic rivers, we came to a gorgeous little spot called "Two Rivers." At this convergence of the Jacks Fork and Current rivers, the silt heavy rapids of the Current meet the clear calm of the Jacks Fork river and one can actually see the divide between the two. I couldn't help but think of the divide between our access to clean water and the lack thereof in the villages of rural Ghana.

Troy and I consume on average, about 12 to 20 (20 oz) bottles of water daily. That's 12 to 20 times per day that, unlike the people in rural Ghana, Troy and I avoid illness without even realizing it. Regardless of how many miles we ride, we have no doubt that stopping anywhere along the road for water will be easy and risk-free.

Welcome to Our Blog!

Hi Everyone!

This blog is dedicated to the transamerican cycling trip I am planning for this summer. I will be riding with my best friend and colleague, Troy Chapman. Troy and I are so excited to be living one of our adventurous dreams, and are even more thrilled to be doing it for a great cause.

The purpose of our ride is to raise awareness for issues surrounding sustainability. Some of you are thinking... "what the heck does she mean by sustainability?!", while others are probably thinking... "well, that's a deep subject!" The focus of the ride is a result of the building mountain of evidence that Troy and I have been coming across in our studies and experiences regarding how inefficient American food production is, how large corporate entities or agricultural conglomerates are influencing our health, and how our lifestyles contribute to the health and environmental issues we face today. The flawed system, which includes our policies, corporate allegiances in politics and research, and our out of control media may be at the center of many of the issues we face today:

heart disease
obesity
cancer
diabetes
American contributions to global warming
water scarcity (to name just a few)

I know many of you will read this and probably wonder where I am getting my information, and I applaud you for that response! I encourage you to research these issues on your own, decide for yourself, and share your unembellished findings with others and myself. One note: when you find research/statistics/bold claims, investigate further to see if there are any hidden motives behind the statements.

So, this blog will be a place where you can track the progress of our ride, see what other Americans know or think about these issues, and gain access to information Troy or I come across. We will be posting links to websites where you can learn more about these issues and why Troy and I have become so excited to be part of exterminating ignorance in America. It is the time for change. Stand up Americans!

Peace,

Cynthia
